How it all started

The year was 1987. A beautiful baby girl was born to a rocket scientist who came from a family of Ayurvedic doctors from Sri Lanka. Her doting parents found that their baby girl’s skin was reacting badly to a popular brand of baby lotion. Dr. Lingam and his wife unsuccessfully searched for something gentler, safer, and non-irritating in the stores and pharmacies. Of course, Dr. Lingam was not discouraged. Not only did he come from an illustrious line of Ayurvedic specialists, he was also part of an esteemed group of scientists, physicians and research chemists.

Dr. Lingam sought the help of his friend, Brian Jegasothy, MD who was part of his inner circle (and formerly Chairman, Department of Dermatology, University of Pittsburgh, USA). A research team headed by Dr. Jegasothy was soon formed to fulfill the quest for a skin care product that was non-irritating, non-inflammatory and gentle on infant skin. This research team had a combined experience of over 200 years and consisted of accomplished dermatologists, scientists and physicians.

Dr. Lingam, Dr. Jegasothy and their team had a vision to develop an irritant free skin care line that would tap into mother nature’s own healing power to keep the skin hydrated, well nourished and radiant. This team, guided by Dr. Jegasothy’s scientific research knew something that most skin care lines did not seem to know or care about. Dr. Jegasothy had discovered the relationship between continuous inflammation, disease and aging. They found that, "Continuous inflammation, including sub-clinical inflammation was the root-cause of premature aging and was linked to development of chronic diseases and cancer."

They found that the regular and continuous use of skincare products available in the marketplace resulted in inflammation which would later show up in the form of deadly diseases. This discovery greatly alarmed Dr. Lingam and his team of scientists. The team was then inspired to form Hylunia Skin Care in 1988 to enable people of all ages and skin types to enjoy healthy and beautiful skin throughout their life without compromising their health and safety. And now, 30+ years later, Hylunia Skincare is delivering on that promise!

Hylunia developed its 7-P’s philosophy based on its core ideology.  This core philosophy is the guiding light of Hylunia’s product formulation, research and development.

Why do we focus on preventing inflammation?

Hylunia’s founders discovered through their extensive research that “Continuous inflammation, including sub-clinical inflammation is the root-cause of premature aging and can lead to many chronic diseases.” Dr. Lingam, one of the co-founders of Hylunia comes from generations of Ayurvedic practitioners from Sri Lanka. Ayurveda, a 5000-year-old medical science from India also prioritizes minimizing inflammation. Thus, inflammation is the enemy of healthy and graceful aging and that is why we have to prevent it. If we can prevent or minimize inflammation, we can prevent or minimize premature aging. While aging cannot be stopped or avoided, premature aging can be prevented.

The product has to penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin – if the product cannot penetrate it cannot do you any good no matter how expensive it is or how many great ingredients it has.

Are skincare products enough to take care of my skin?

Dr. Lingam says, “Prevention and happiness are the best anti-aging medicine.”

Using skincare products is not enough to fully take care of your skin. Skin is your body’s largest organ and Ayurveda says the mind and body are interconnected and influence each other. Therefore, the health of your skin is dependent on the overall health of your body and mind and the strength of your immune system. To help with all this Dr. Lingam recommends developing a stable and regular routine in life and to avoid the extremes. Incorporate Yoga, Meditation and Pranayama into your daily practice. Practice deep gratitude and relaxation. You may also need to take certain supplements to remain healthy. Dr. Lingam says, it is very important to avoid stress and you need to find ways to release stress if you are in a very stressful job or relationship. You have to make sure to eat what is healthy, natural, green and in season. Preventing the ingestion of harmful chemicals through food or personal care products is another very important aspect of holistic skincare. Finally, drink lots of water and get sufficient sleep. So, you see, you need to take a whole person and lifestyle approach to skincare.

Who are the founders of Hylunia Skincare? What are their credentials?

Dr. Lingam (co-founder)

Dr. Lingam got involved in skin care after finding out about the toxic chemicals in his baby’s skin care products. Dr. Lingam was born into multiple generations of Ayurvedic family physicians in Sri Lanka and educated in England in Chemical Engineering and worked in pharmaceutical and synthetic (rocket) fuels before entering into the anti-aging – wellness field twenty-five years ago. Since 1988, he has combined the wisdom of the East with the science of the West to provide true and practical result-oriented, age-defying programs, therapies, and toxins free formulations. These programs and therapies encompass yoga, Ayurveda, meditation, mantra, energy work, Ayurvedic Aromacology, chakra balancing, anti-aging treatments and programs, detox programs (intense Panchakarma), weight management, natural skin care, nutritional products, aesthetic treatments and happiness.

Dr. Lingam has conducted research for 15 years with Brian Jegasothy, MD, formally chairman of the Department of Dermatology, University of Pittsburgh, on anti-aging and inflammatory ingredients. He has also researched and worked with nutritional experts, Yogis and Ayurvedic physicians in India, anti-aging physicians and scientists, plastic surgeons, physicians and Naturopathic physicians to develop age-defying programs and therapies. 

Dr. Lingam shares his scientific research of the 5000-year-old Yoga-Ayurveda-Siddha medicine and experience through Yoga, Ayurveda and Anti-Aging seminars and workshops around the world. He lives in Henderson, Nevada, USA. 

His research with Dr. Brian Jegasothy led to the development of formulations that are natural and free of inflammatory and potentially carcinogenic ingredients which are linked to aging, diseases and cancer.

His experience of growing up in yoga and in an Ayurvedic physician family as well as his knowledge of inflammatory and carcinogenic ingredients and the implication of stress, convinced him to incorporate the best of the modern science with the modalities of the East to boost the immune system performance and to live healthy and happy.

Dr. Brian Jegasothy (co-founder)

Brian V. Jegasothy (born March 3, 1943 in Colombo, Sri Lanka) was a dermatologist and visiting professor at over 50 Universities and clinics and was the Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh from 1987 to 1999.

Jegasothy helped develop an improved treatment for a rare kind of cancer known as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Jegasothy and his colleagues at Yale University established the standard photopheresis technique used to treat serious cases of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. He also aided in the study of immunobullous diseases, which is when the immune system attacks the skin and causes it to blister and fall off.

He helped in the development of a topical form of FK506, which is an anti-rejection drug invented by organ transplant researchers at Pittsburgh. Topical FK506 has been used to treat conditions such as psoriasis in addition to the rashes that transplant patients develop.

Brian V. Jegasothy had served in many leadership positions, including:


• Board of Directors for the Society of Investigative Dermatology, 1992-2001.

• Board of Directors for the Association of the Professors of Dermatology, 1989-2001.

• Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee for the Society of Investigative Dermatology, 1985-1990.

• Chairman of the Scientific Awards Committee for the American Academy of Dermatology, 1985-1988.

• President of the American Society for Dermatologic Allergy and Immunology, 1984.
• Examiner for the American Board of Dermatology. 

Brian V. Jegasothy was a boarder and scholar at Wesley College, Colombo. He won the Hill Medal in 1960 and obtained a direct entry to the new Medical Facility in Peradeniya. While he worked at a local bank for a short time, he met his future wife Dr. Juliet Jegasothy, medical director for hospital accreditation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.


In 1961, he earned his bachelor's degree for Biology and in 1966, he earned his medical degree, both at the University of Ceylon. He also received a master's degree from University of Pennsylvania.


Brian came to the US to study at Yale. From Yale, Jegasothy's career took him to Duke University, where he worked as a clinician, educator, administrator and researcher, receiving numerous grants from pharmaceutical companies, foundations, and the National Institutes of Health. He later joined the University of Pennsylvania, before he became chairman of the dermatology department at the University of Pittsburgh in 1987, a post he held until 1999.


Throughout his career Brian V. Jegasothy was a visiting professor at countless national and international universities, including Yale University, Cambridge University, and New York University. He worked on identifying a series of T-cell cytokines, documenting immunologic deficiencies in several dermatologic illnesses, evaluating extracorporeal photopheresis and pioneering the studies of oral FK506. He also served on numerous editorial boards and was a prominent participant and leader in multiple dermatological organizations.

Alice Thiel (Co-Founder)

Alice Thiel, president of Skin Care Association of America is also one of the directors at Hylunia Skincare. Alice was born in a small town of Kalinowo, Poland, later Philadelphia became her new home. In 1962, Alice and Peter (her husband) opened their first salon, Peter's Tres Chic. In 1973, they bought skincare equipment from Europe and added the concept of "the complete service salon" to their existing business and it became a success. She became a member of an elite body named C.I.D.E.S.C.O in 1988.
Alice, in the midst of raising children, built a home and the shopping center where the business is now located, Plaza III West Shopping Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Her children are active members of their family business. She is now, grooming her fourth generation to augment the family's profession.

In addition to these three, the Hylunia founding team had many other experts and their combined experience exceeded 200 years!
