German Chamomile

What is German Chamomile?

Chamomile is one of the most popular herbs in the Western world and consists of two distinct plants: the more popular German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Roman, or English, chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). Although they belong to different species, they are often used to treat the same health problems such as calming frayed nerves, treat various stomach problems, relieve muscle spasms, and treat skin conditions and mild infections. German Chamomile is commonly known as wild chamomile, Hungarian chamomile and pineapple weed, and can be found near populated areas all over Europe, temperate Asia, North America and Australia. The word chamomile comes from the Greek word meaning "earth-apple", so called because of the apple-like scent of the plant. Over time, German chamomile has often been used in herbal medicine for a sore stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, and as a gentle sleep aid. It is also used as a mild laxative, anti-inflammatory and bactericidal.

German Chamomile's Benefits for Skin

In skin care, German chamomile contains chemicals that seem to promote relaxation and reduce swelling, although studies are ongoing to isolate the exact chemicals. It also reduces swelling by slowing the production of chemicals - called prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and histamines - that are usually released by the body to create a swelling response. Chamomile is often used topically in a cream or ointment to soothe irritated skin, or as an essential oil to treat skin irritation or eczema.
