What is Peppermint?

Peppermint is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint that was first cultivated near London in 1750, but is easily grown in Italy, Japan, and the United States. Being a hybrid, it is usually sterile and produces no seeds. The Peppermint leaves and flowering tops are collected, dried and cultivated for better oil content. The oil is extracted from steam distillation of dried leaves right before the plant flowers.
